AA Bursaries are offered to current AA Undergraduate School students and to new AA Graduate School students.

What is the application procedure for AA Bursaries for new AA Graduate School Students?

• You must apply by 13 January 2012 for admission to the School, in order to be considered for an AA Bursary.
• You must indicate on your application form in the box provided that you wish to be considered for the AA Bursary.
• Upon an official offer of a place in the AA Graduate School, please contact bursaries@aaschool.ac.uk, to request an AA Bursary Application Form, if you wish to apply for an AA Bursary.
• The completed AA Bursary Form must be returned to the Registrar’s Office by mid-March 2012 (exact date stated on application form).
• The AA Graduate Bursary Committee, which meets in late March / early April to distribute the awards, bases its decision on a combination of outstanding merit, financial need and recommendation from the AA Graduate School Programme Director/s.

What is the application procedure for AA Bursaries for current Undergraduate School Students?

• Please contact the Registrar’s Office (bursaries@aaschool.ac.uk) in mid March for an AA Undergraduate Bursary Application Form for the following academic year. (AA Bursaries must be applied for on a yearly basis)
• The deadline for completing and returning the AA Bursary Application Form is mid May (exact date given on form).
• The AA Undergraduate Bursary Committee, which meets in July to distribute the awards, bases its decision on a combination of outstanding merit, financial need and recommendation from the student’s AA Unit Master/s.
• Please note: any student in receipt of an AA Scholarship is not eligible to apply for an AA Bursary

How much financial assistance is provided by an AA Bursary?

An AA Bursary award covers a proportion of a student’s fees from between half a term to one-and-a-half terms of the academic year’s tuition fees. Please note: this Bursary would be awarded on the understanding that you are not in receipt of an additional award that is more than the value of one term’s fees.

Charlotte Coudrille Bursary

Charlotte Coudrille, who died in 2001, ran the AA Accounts Office for a number of years. The Charlotte Coudrille Bursary has been established by Marian Keys who used to work for her, and will be awarded annually to a student who is in need of financial assistance. (Please note that this Bursary Award is for £2000.)

Marjorie Morrison Bursary

Marjorie Morrison MBE, AA Slide Librarian from 1935 to 1975 and researcher until 1985, died in 1992 in her ninety-second year, having bequeathed a generous sum to the AA Foundation for the purpose of 'helping a student through the school or for such other purposes as would be of benefit to the students'. The sum was modestly increased by donations from among Marjorie's friends. The bursary is awarded in her memory each July.

Max Lock Bursary

Max Lock studied at the AA from 1926 to 1931 and taught at the school during the late 1930s. The bursary is funded by his generous bequest to the AA Foundation.

Elizabeth Chesterton Bursary Fund

AA alumna and former Councillor Dame Elizabeth Chesterton OBE, who died in 2002 left a generous bequest in support of bursaries for British students at the AA.

Anne Gregory Bursary

A bursary is offered each year in memory of Anne Gregory, who died while in her first year of studies at the AA.

R D Hammett Bursary

This long-term bursary is funded by the generous bequest to the AA Foundation of R D Hammett, a graduate of the AA School. Eligibility is based on merit and financial need.

Doris Lockhart Bursary

A new bursary has been set up this year by AA supporter and former AA council member Doris Lockhart, in support of UK and international students in need of financial assistance. The bursary looks to reward, at an undergraduate level, a student’s ability to represent architectural ideas in writing.

Fletcher Priest Foundation Bursary

The Fletcher Priest Foundation, established by AA alumni Keith Priest and Michael Fletcher, has initiated this year a generous commitment to the AA Foundation, to support over the coming years a number of bursaries for deserving undergraduate AA students in need of financial assistance.

Mercers’ Bursary

This one-term bursary has been made available since 2002 thanks to the generous support of the Mercers’ Company, the City of London’s premier livery company. It is awarded annually to a British student.

Mike Davies Bursary Fund

This bursary fund, established in 2008 in support of British or UK-based students within the AA’s five-year architecture programme, will reward innovative thinking and application in design. It is generously supported by AA alumnus Mike Davies CBE, founding partner of Richard Rogers & Partners (now Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners) and current AA council member.

Other AA Awards

Nicholas Boas Travel Award

A travel award open to AA students who wish to study Roman architecture and urbanism has been established in memoryof AA graduate Nicholas Boas (1975–1998). It provides funds for a one-month study visit based at the British School in Rome.

Nicholas Pozner Fund

This fund celebrates our students’ passion and enthusiasm for architecture as explored through drawing. The fund was set up in memory of recent AA graduate Nick Pozner, as a tribute to the talent he showed during his promising and influential time at the AA, and the impressive precision and beauty of his drawings. The Fund awards an annual Prize for the Single Best Drawing of the year in the AA’s Undergraduate School. The AA is grateful to Nick’s family and friends for the inspiration and dedication shown in setting up and supporting this prize.

Anthony Pott Memorial Award

As trustees of this fund, the AA offers an award to assist a study project related to architecture and design. The award is intended to fund original study or the publication of completed work.

Michael Ventris Memorial Fund

This award is open to candidates of at least RIBA/ARB Intermediate status or equivalent. The fund was established in 1957 in memory of Michael Ventris and in appreciation of his work in the fields of Mycenaean civilisation and architecture. It is intended to promote study in those areas and is available to support a specifically defined and achievable project.

Jane Chu Travel Scholarship

The Jane Chu Travel Scholarship has been set up by a donation from AA alumnus Margaret Chow. The award is in the name of her mother, and will facilitate travel for students working in the field of sustainability.

Beverly Bernstein Prize

The Beverly Bernstein Prize has been set up through the generous support of friends and family to commemorate Beverly Bernstein’s involvement with the AA, in recognition of her life-long interest and specialisation in housing and development planning. The annual award of £1000 will be given in support of student work in housing and/or urbanism in the developing world, and is run by the AA through its postgraduate programme in Housing & Urbanism.
